Really, Steve Jobs? Really?!

I was given an iPod Touch for Christmas. I love(d) it. It was like my little electronic pet that could do awesome things and was always there for me, until yesterday.

I turned it on as usual, and it flashed the 'Restore' screen. Flashed it. Then, booted normally. Then, it flashed the Apple screen, rebooted, and worked for enough time for me to see that the battery level was low. I plugged it in and charged it, thinking that was the problem. It worked for a couple hours after the charge, then went into a boot sequence that wouldn't stop.

Being new to Apple products, I thought, "Well, maybe someone has had this happen to their iPod?" I looked it up - there are thousand of links about this problem. There are tons of YouTube videos with people showing their iPod doing the exact same thing.

Faulty. The iPod Touch is faulty.

I did a complete restore. I do not have a jailbroken iPod. I am a very conscientious user. I backup. I don't get apps from anywhere but the app store. I haven't dropped it, gotten it wet, sat on it, etc. The only thing that's different today than yesterday is an upgrade to the DSL speed at the house, but I don't see how that could affect it.
After the restore, it ran one more random boot sequence before I went to sleep. This morning it turned on fine.I don't know if it's 'fixed'. I can't rely on it anymore. It could turn into a brick at any minute. I've never had any computer/electronic component that I couldn't trust to work, before. See, I'm a PC and though I've complained about Windows and Microsoft a thousand times, I've always had a reliable Windows system.

Windows/Microsoft has the greatest share of the computer market. People write viruses for Windows. The newest version of a Windows OS usually has a few bugs, but most of the problems arise from areas that are vulnerable to intrusion. The hardware is rarely and issue. Everyone makes hardware for Windows - and the hardware works.

Let's say you run a company that would like to pull in some of those Windows users. You decide you will completely control the hardware for your equipment. Wouldn't you make sure it was the best, most reliable,
hardware you could have made? Seeing as most of the people trying your smaller items - iPod, Touch, iPad - are likely Windows users and this will be their first experience with your brand, don't you want their experience with your product to be great? Don't you want them to have a dependable, stable gadget? Don't you want them to love it so much, they at least consider switching to your computer line?

We all know Jobs is about the flash, but I thought Apple was more than flash. I thought the products were well-made. The Apple products are amazing, but amazing for 6 months could be the reason they don't have the market share of Windows. To me, from my first experience with Apple, it looks like they are making 'really awesome crap'. Toys, for adults, that break like dollar store items, without the cheap price tag.

Why am I so upset, since the iPod Touch was a gift, after all? I bought my mother an iPad for Mother's Day. It looks very nice, but I no longer trust it to work for more than a few months. I could have bought her a laptop or a netbook and she would have been better off. I didn't know Apple doesn't care if their products work, they just want them to look really cool. I feel like a dupe.

Bill Gates, I'm sorry for all the mean things I've said about you and your OS since 1996. Steve Jobs, you suck.

The iPad, or Why I'd Drop That Thing

I'm not getting an iPad. I'm not even considering it. It looks cool. Almost like something I'd want, but you can't print with it, so you can't really write with it, unless you email all your documents over to another computer.
I have an iPod Touch and it's exactly what I want - everything but a phone. The iPad is just a really BIG iPod. Plus, there's nothing to hold onto. I have trouble with the iPod. I need to get a holster for it, or something. You can't do much of anything while holding it; it's too slippery. Imagine a giant slippery piece of electronics. You can't drop it in your pocket. What are you going to do with it when you need your hands? Do you have to walk around all day with a bag on, just to hold it? It doesn't seem like a very convenient
tool.

God Bless, Steve Harvey

All my life, I've been told I should let a man do the things I'm quite capable of doing myself. A friend's older aunt once said, "You girls won't find a man till you learn to let them do things for you. You can open the olive jar, but just pretend you can't."

I couldn't do it. To me, 'pretending' is the same as lying or manipulating.

Since Harvey's book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, was a best seller, I decided to read it. He words it a bit differently than everyone else who ever advised me. His advice - Relax, let a man do what a man can do. That's not a lie or manipulation. It's realizing a man can open that olive jar faster and with more ease than you, so let him. Don't strain yourself. Simply, hand him the jar.

This, I can do.

Almost the Same Name

Gabourey Sidibe is the funniest actress I have ever heard in interviews. She is clever, sarcastic, and quick witted.
I haven't seen the movie Precious. It simply doesn't look like anything I'd want to see, so the first time she showed up on a talk show I wasn't going to watch her interview. I thought it would be one of those akward interviews with a new celebrity. I'm sure you've seen them. They hem and haw and don't really know what to say. Not Gabourey. She will blow you away.

The Jukebox in My Head

For several months now, the jukebox in my head has been playing Sukiyaki.

Not exclusively, but on heavy rotation.

Usually, the most recent song I've heard sticks in my head. Lately, when I haven't heard a song for a couple hours, Sukiyaki pops into play. I never liked that song. Curses!

Don't Hate Her Because She's Beautiful

I heard that Taylor Swift song on the radio. You know the one, I'm the perfect girl because I'm so down to earth. Since I'm usually wearing my Chuck Taylor's, I assume the position of the best friend girl, Taylor's position in the song. But, you know what? I wear heels. I used to hang out with the cheerleaders. I didn't want a crowd staring at me, so I never joined the squad, but I did learn all the cheers with them. Who's writing their song?

What's wrong with the girl who wears heels and cares about her appearance? What's wrong with the girl who doesn't like the (usually locker room style) humor of boys? What's wrong with a girl who likes a different type of music? Why is she assumed to be the 'wrong' girl? Opposites attract, after all - or so they say.

Maybe Taylor's right and that girl would be perfect for that guy, but maybe not. Maybe that girl would not push the guy to be more than he is right now. Maybe he'd end up working at a garage, drinking, and not having any ambition.

I'm just saying, I'd like to hear the cheerleader's side of the story.

Filthy Stinking Humans

I'm having a problem with the smell of humans. Where I work, there are a lot of people coming through all the time. I've gotten to the point of holding my breath when I walk past the main areas they gather.

The smells that bother me the most are food smells. I can't stand people who smell like dinner. I don't mean a specific food smell, but like they hang their coats in the kitchen and all the dinners they've had are embedded in the cloth. I don't think people should smell like food. I'd rather they smell like cigars, or bleach, or just about anything - but not food.

Second worst are hair smells. If you aren't familiar with hair smells, scratch your head and smell your fingernails. Now, imagine that smell so strong someone walking past you could smell it. I don't know how the smell gets that strong. It's not like I'm working around homeless people. These are normal, everyday people - well-dressed, clean-looking, yet stinky.

It's really hard to help someone with Zim's voice in my head - 'Filthy, stinking, humans.'

How Do Stupid People Keep Their Jobs?

I'm kinda sad today. A bunch of friends in the same 'industry' just got their walking papers yesterday. Their director is a self-serving moron who's been trying to get rid of them for about three years. Claiming the current economic woes require cuts, he's slashing everyone who knows his mistakes - the smart ones. He's been forcing them out since he started - him and his idiot apprentice. The apprentice once forced out a friend
because she was 'too creative'. She's dumber than a brick and gets rid of anyone who notices.
I'm trying to do what I can for them, but there's really not much you can do.

If you don't understand the 'business', there's no way you can see how horrible this man is doing his job. He's flash and no substance. It used to be run by the best and the brightest, but he's said himself, he wants 'generic' employees. If everyone is dumber than him, he looks good. God help us!

Those who are left are keeping their heads down. They've been doing it since he started. Don't think, don't show you can do too much, scrape by, and hope he doesn't realize you're smart. The inmates are running the
institution. :(
